Shield #lichen from the #Parmeliaceae family. I am not skilled enough to identify it more than this. I love finding them. I think they are quite amazing. I have one on my car

This Shield Lichen, a member of the vast Parmeliaceae family with some 2,700 species, is neither a plant nor a moss. Instead, it's a composite organism—a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner like an alga.

Green shield lichens of happiness I like to call them foliose lichens grow on trees and rocks. "They are part of the Parmeliaceae family of lichens." #lichens #shieldlichens #greenshieldlichens #botany #zoology #winter #wisconsin #upnorth #photography #nature #photo #naturetherapy #trees #lichen

I’ve been leaning into mosses and lichen lately. Parmeliaceae is a family of lichen that can grow and flourish just about anywhere, from tree canopies to in-between rocks. They thrive in a multitude of climates as well, ranging from the Arctic to the rainforest. #naturalist #nature #lichen

I haven't come close to doing this small lichen moth justice, but I had a try. It really does have those little raised flaps with black underneath. It's perfectly adapted to camouflaging itself on certain kinds of lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. #mothmay

I saw this Greenshield lichen, Flavoparmelia caperata, in the woods today. It's in the Parmeliaceae family & grows on dying or dead branches. I have not found a medicinal use for it yet, but it's lovely to look at. #fungifriends #foraging

Parmeliaceae #lichen collar, Vaccinium myrtillus crown, accessorize with a spray of Usnea sp. and a soupçon of Cladonia & moss. Looking good fencepost.

Hypotrachyna revoluta, Parmelia saxatilis, Punctelia jeckeri, Hypotrachyna afrorevoluta, Hindhead Common, Surrey. Some of the slightly less common Parmeliaceae among the hundreds of Flavoparmelia caperata and Parmotrema perlatum on the trees.

A quick trip to town, then out for my morning walk. Got lucky today and the buggies were headed in the opposite direction. Buggies, deer and escaped cows in the road are the usual traffic delays for me 😂. Cherry trees are blooming, ginseng is up & the lichen are enjoying the wet weather.

A tree covered by a species of Parmeliaceae, the largest family of lichen-forming fungi. It turns out this is not the north side of the tree, but because of where it’s positioned on a ridgeline, it is the shadiest side.

apparently it’s Oak-moss… and yes, google says it does belong to Parmeliaceae family…. 10 points.

These are definitely lichens, and quite a few species here! The big central rosette is from the Parmeliaceae family (aka Shield Lichens). Most likely it's Xanthoparmelia, or Rock Shield Lichens. To ID further is hard (for me, at least), it *looks* like X. conspersa, but..

Gorgeous. Is that Parmeliaceae? I’m not a lichen expert by any means but I appreciate it nonetheless

I was initially suspecting Melanohalea/Melanelixia based on my initial thoughts, but after taking a peek at the Parmeliaceae reported to iNat in the UK so far, Xanthoparmelia pulla or X. loxodes are better fits than my initial suspects.
