The Parrotfish fully embraced our first week of the Readathon that ended with Book Character Day! They have been diving into the world of books and enjoyed sharing about their favourite characters with the class.

This is 100% true, btw. And I honestly thought I elaborated on it ages ago when I posted this.

Female parrotfish, when there are no males around, will hole up, swap their entire gender and get swole, and reemerge as a breeding male.

The ocean still contains astonishing, ridiculous beauty. Cuttlefish change costumes. Parrotfish sleep in mucus cocoons. Nudibranchs look wildly overdressed for every occasion. There is joy available in their existence, without requiring them to be a conservation success story first.

My inventory of fish stickers is growing! Parrot fish, porcupine fish, and cownose ray. (Yes, a ray is a fish!) I’m trying to pick the best time to list my nudibranch sticker in the shop 👀 #fishstickers #oceanstickers #nudibranch #parrotfish #porcupinefish #fish #aquarium #stingray #marinestickers

Beyond the sunlight, the parrotfish rolled through the deep shipwreck, laughing at a nice seashell.

The absolute best "fun fact" that I learned about Bermuda is that the famous pink sand they are known for is basically parrotfish poop.

"Overfishing is another major threat. In particular, the overfishing of parrotfish and groupers affects reef ecosystems since these fish help maintain ecological balance.

Coastal development, pollution, tourism and increasingly severe storms also contribute to reef degradation."
Almost all of world's coral reefs face critical risk of collapse
Almost all of the world’s shallow-water coral reefs are at risk of collapse by 2075, with climate change the biggest threat. A new study found that 96% of reef systems are critically endangered.

I finally got a parrotfish tattoo to memorialize Ramón (my favourite @coralcitycamera.bsky.social yellowtail parrotfish) last month. We even made sure to place the tattoo so one of my freckles would be at the tip of his pec fin, just like Ramón! 🥰

I finally got on a kick to make a few Off the Rack dresses, so I'm including those here and skipping a couple story ones just .... I'll get back to them when I have the story finished, since I'm getting close to the end. Despite my not mentioning the story anymore.
Also I made a hotdog dress.

Ok, I just finished my parrotfish illustration, using Procreate. This was a tricky fish at times, plus I was trying out some new watercolor brushes. But I think it turned out ok.

The subject for next month’s #OceanDevotion Mail Club? We’ll see…

Thanks @mediumman.bsky.social for the suggestion!

The parrotfish is born female and as it ages to maturity, becomes male. Meaning every male parrotfish on the planet was at one point female. And parrotfish are why you have sandy white beaches - because they eat coral and shit out sand. (Seriously. White sand beach = parrotfish shit).

Tropical beaches are often sand shat out by parrotfish that have chewed up hard coral.

To Help Coral Reefs Come Back, Fake It (With Sound) 'Til Fish Make It
NPR December 2019
Tim Gordon (University of Exeter): Clownfish whoop, cod grunt, parrotfish crunch, sea urchins scrape, shrimp snap their claws making a symphony of reef noise heard from miles away.

To Help Coral Reefs Come Back, Fake It (With Sound) 'Til Fish Make It
Researchers have found that by playing the sounds of healthy reefs in places where coral has died, fish are more readily attracted back, and help speed the reef's recovery.
