In my new job, I will be tracking songbird migration in autumn over the North Sea using motus radiotransmitters. Since the beginning of our field season at Lista bird ringing station in August, we have already successfully deployed 192 tags on 18 different passerine species!

New paper from my PhD out in @animalecology.bsky.social -- we used eBird data to investigate the effects of migration-driven turnover in community diversity and composition to phylogenetic structure. Excited to share!

The spatiotemporal effects of seasonal migration on passerine phylogenetic community structure
The effects of mobile organisms on community structure and assembly are poorly understood. Distributional data show that seasonal migration in birds drives a complex continental redistribution of phy...

The Gouldian finch (Chloebia gouldiae), also known as the Gould's finch or the rainbow finch, is a colourful passerine bird that is native to Australia.

I saw this one at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA.

What a cutie. Bears a slight resemblance to the Bearded Reedling. This is a very weird taxonomy: More recent and comprehensive phylogenetic studies support it belonging to the parrotbill family Paradoxornithidae.Which happens to include Bearded Reedling. Weird distribution for a passerine!

Shot over to the hoverport and nearby beach for some (hopefully) passerine action at lunchtime. Quite busy with Brambling, Redpolls, a fearless Black Redstart, many Blackbirds (but strangely no Ouzel) and a Sibe-type Chiff which didn’t call or perform for digital capture, unfortunately #kentbirding

Was treated to a show today by a small bird of prey doing incredible aerobatics trying to variously evade a few crows and catch a passerine of some kind. Nature is cool. #runsky #running

The long view had me pondering passerine vision and migration.

I could squint and (just) spot top of Gunfleet Sands windfarm (53km). Sheerness Docks (12.5km), Chetney marshes (11km) and Greenborough marshes (8km) all easier.

Goldcrest

A very small passerine bird in the kinglet family. Its colourful golden crest feathers, as well as being called the "king of the birds" in European folklore, gives rise to its scientific name. The scientific name, R. regulus, means 'petty king' or prince.
