Clothing for a Change This pastel pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco | Metallic Contours – 2026-09-11’ shows a clothed woman for a change. I had some glitter and glamour in mind. Last one was an angular cubist drawing of a seated woman and I thought I should make another one. However, something came to mind and that was a drawing of a year ago, inspired by photographer Gjon Mili. A lot of backlighting made that dress almost look on fire. Then I remembered those art deco shiny dresses female moviestarts wore in the 1930s. Louise Brooks came to mind and probably a lot more actresses had these on. Folds – Always a Challenge The idea was to have my model sit and the folds of the dress would become the main theme of the drawing. You see, I’m specialized in the female form but clothing – especially folds – always is a challenge. See what I could do with them this time. First, there are so many forms that can appear: little wrinkles and some big folds, almost like waves. Obviously, in such a shiny dress there is a hugh tonal bandwidth to be found. A lot of abrupt tonal shifts and some nice gradients too. Consequently, these take a lot more time to capture because there are so many of them. The result is spectacular though and worth the effort. Soften It up Last night, after midnight I thought I had finished the drawing. Evening light always makes tonal values a bit more dull. This morning I saw the tonal play in the dress still looked a bit ‘harsh’. Sometimes, when they are not handled properly, they can look like icebergs. A bit of softening and darkening up the negative space did the job alright. Makes me want to do some more.

Not an Striking Path? This pastel drawing ‘Den Haag | Bezuidenhout – 2026-08-24’ carries strokes of swirling intensity reminiscent of Van Gogh’s restless style. The reason was a walk back from my garage for my car’s annual MOT inspection. It was a sunny day and there is this incredible path at the outer edge of the Bezuidenhout quarter. Situated next to the canal adjacent to the Carel Reinierszkade, it borders the British School of The Netherlands. Not a particularly striking path, just one mostly trodden by dog owners. Sometimes those are the best because beauty can be found anywhere. You don’t have to go to famous nature reserves with high hopes. Often, it’s just around the corner. In this particular case the foliage and grass covered up houses and cars at the left. Almost as if Bezuidenhout knows its own intimate pockets of green where you can truly feel outdoors. Berckheyde Revisited However, I came back early and the sun was still very low and it shone through the trees. Because of its slanted angle, it created blocks of light and darkness. Gerrit Berckheyde’s painting of the Herengracht in Amsterdam came to mind. Again, for it was not the first time. Back in 2022 I made a drawing of Clingendael in which I used this very striking tonal rhythm. The only thing left was to find a style fit for capturing these blocks. The Luminous Palette Obviously, the blocked style in my last drawing of De Ravenberg was not a suitable candidate. The scenery was one of lush and wavy grasses. I immediately though of Van Gogh’s style of depicting such grasses, especially in Auvers-sur-Oise paintings. The idea was to use quarter‑circle curves to suggest foliage and grasses with a hint of cubism. Of course the blocks of light, giving structure and the aforesaid rhythm. To beef up colour contrasts I used lots of blue violets and even some pinks. This way I achieved the luminous palette, with yellow and purple as integral components.

An Impressive Tree This pastel pencil drawing ‘Beek-Ubbergen | The Elysian Canopy Tree – 2026-08-11’ shows my birth ground in greens, violets and blues. Just like the last drawing of Clingendael I focused on these particular set of colors. Luckily, I had the perfect reference photo for it. Some time ago I took it on one of my Saturday afternoon trips, wandering about Berg en Dal. The actual spot at hand is on the outer skirts of the Elysian Fields. The latter consist of a couple of meadows between the Boterberg and the Ravenberg. There is this impressive tree dominating the corner of the path to the Ravenberg and the Natte Beek. Even my father knew it from his youth. The first time I saw it was when he took me on a trip in 1980, walking the famous N70-route. The tree stuck with me and sometimes I pay it a visit. The Second Time Around The drawing didn’t come easy, I must confess. In fact, I made it twice: today and last weekend. Starting last Wednesday, August 5th I set out to render the folioage in cubist swirls. Looking at the curved and even crooked tree branches I thought those swirls could match those branches quite well. However, it turned into a big disappointment. It seems that I took the job a bit too lightly, perhaps having my last drawing in mind. That one came easy and I was expecting this one flowing out of my pastels pencils too. Nothing but hubris, because the tree branches were way more complex than initially expected. Those foliage curves looked ridiculous because they lacked the necessary depth. How about that for a change? Lots of good drawings, one after another and then, it feels like a rookie mistake.
