#pathemata
Anyone who has written about physical pain (me) knows how hard it is to capture. Maggie Nelson does it brilliantly in Pathemata: Or, The Story of My Mouth, which is never singular, and takes in love, mortality, parenting, the pandemic.

Pathemata by Maggie Nelson review – a writer’s attempt to describe chronic pain
Woolf said language ‘runs dry’ when it comes to convey the reality of illness. Here is an impressive effort to do just that

Nelson is the kind of writer who could make any topic interesting, but this subject perfectly showcases her talents. In this short, gorgeous prose poem, medical appointments are interspersed with dreams, grief, COVID-era alienation, and a strained marriage. Funny yet harrowing.
Pathemata: Or the Story of My Mouth by Maggie Nelson
Pathemata, Or, The Story of My Mouth is an experiment in interiority written in the pandemic studio. Something of a companion piece to 2009's Bluets, Pathemata merges a pain diary chronicling a decade of jaw pain with dreams and dailies, eventually blurring the lines between embodied, unconscious, and everyday life.

Lese „Der gefesselter Prometheus“, denke an „pathemata mathemata“, d. h. lernen durch leiden. Es muss nicht so sein, aber oftmals ist es so.

“Let us return to pathemata mathemata (learning through pain) and consider its reverse: learning through thrills and pleasure. People have two brains, one when there is skin in the game, one when there is none"

Maggie Nelson’s strange new Pathemata was a great read. Short, vulnerable, and slippery. Between dream and reality, as she notes in the acknowledgements. Thanks @vintagebooks.bsky.social for the proof!

“Illness strips you back to an authentic self, but not one you need to meet”. Like Pathemata, Mantel’s Ink in the Blood addresses what Nelson calls “the pain puzzle” (the hunt for a diagnosis). HM is very astute on disorienting hospital spaces, a patient’s loss of autonomy and the trauma of illness.
