The only reason people think vitamin C helps with colds is because Linus Pauling said so, and people believed him because he was smart about other stuff.

I only recently learned about Pauling, he's a strong addition to the "credentials doesn't mean you can't be stupid" collection. You can always break out William Shockley or Daniel Carleton Gajdusek to the skeptics

He also thought vitamin C would cure cancer, which did not turn out to be true for him or his wife.
Props to Pauling though, 2 Nobels in 2 different fields is crazy rare.
