Paul Mescal's award-winning Shakespeare film Hamnet is now finding massive success on streaming.

Ridley Scott has denied reports suggesting he fired Paul Mescal from his upcoming film 'The Dog Stars' over concerns about his masculinity in 'Gladiator II'. The filmmaker clarified that Mescal's absence was due to conflicting commitments with another project, specifically Sam Mendes' Beatles biopic. A representative for Scott stated that the actor was 'excited to work with him on Dog Stars' but had to withdraw due to his rehearsal schedule for the Beatles film. The article also highlights the mixed critical reception of 'Gladiator II', which was praised for its action sequences but criticized for lacking the depth of the original. Mescal's role in the Beatles biopic, set for release in 2028, is noted, along with his recent advocacy for transgender rights. The piece underscores the complexities of actor casting in high-profile projects and the challenges of maintaining creative vision amidst logistical constraints.

Ridley Scott culpou falta de masculinidade de Paul Mescal por Gladiador II e demitiu o ator de Ponto Sem Retorno. Entenda.

A new report suggests Ridley Scott attributed the underwhelming reception of 'Gladiator 2' to Paul Mescal's casting as a gladiator, claiming he lacked sufficient masculinity for the role. The film, a sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning historical drama, earned $462 million globally and an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet faced criticism for being inferior to its predecessor. According to Puck’s newsletter, writer Matthew Belloni reported that Scott blamed Mescal's performance, leading to his replacement by Jacob Elordi in Scott's subsequent project 'The Dog Stars,' which flopped at the box office. Critics highlighted the film's reliance on familiar elements like swordfights and rousing speeches without deeper narrative substance. Russell Crowe, who portrayed the original protagonist, expressed disdain for the sequel's lack of moral core. Despite this, Mescal has since achieved critical acclaim with 'Hamnet' and is set to portray Paul McCartney in a Beatles biopic. The article also notes his recent advocacy for transgender rights at London’s Trans+ Pride demonstration.
