Pawspice doesn’t have to be scary. It can be full of joy. I love having Pawspice fosters because I get to spoil them rotten. Waffles decided that her favorite place to drink from was the toilet. So for the last few months of her life, that’s what she got. 1/

Okay, back on my Pawspice kick.

For the new folks- Pawspice is the phrase used in animal welfare to talk about animal hospice.

Hospice in humans is seen as something scary. We fear the loss that comes with end of life.

The goal here is talking through how Pawspice can be a joyful experience

“You can go.”

I ripped my heart out when I walked out the door. Because I mean every word. #pawspice

Most weeks, he bounces around 45. (70 is excellent qOL. 35 and below is time to talk to your vet.)

This is going to be open and honest, because I don’t know any other way to be with this stuff.

Buckle in. #pawspice

End of life decisions for your pet can be scary. While it sounds great to say “you’ll know when it’s time”, that’s often not the case. Reach out and let’s talk. I can help make it less scary and stressful for both of you

The hardest lesson I had to learn along the way is that miracles don’t always look the way we think they should.

As much as we wish it was otherwise, death comes for all of us eventually. Sometimes the miracle is a good passing from this world. #Pawspice
💔 Hoping for that miracle.

Happy Monday- reminder for new folks- I discuss pet hospice/end of life (Pawspice), and foster kittens and cats with medical issues. Posts dealing with that content will be marked with #pawspice or #medfoster an appropriate.

If those topics/images make you uncomfortable, feel free to mute

This isn’t our first Pawspice rodeo by a long shot. It’s about patience and comfort at this point. Homer has the second. We’re just extending the first. 2/e

A $13 dollar set of pjs has reduced everyone’s anxiety and improved Homer’s comfort. This is why Pawspice can be so important. 6/end

Hospice/Pawspice informed vet care is so beneficial to everyone. I’m really hoping we can keep moving lessons on quality of life vs quantity to human end of life discussions.

The miracle tonight would be a little more time. Enough to let him be at home, happy, and comfortable. That little bit probably won’t be years. I’d be okay with a few days. Just a little extra time to help wrap my brain around things. Time to let him go gently. In his favorite spot. #pawspice

I read this as PawSpice (like allspice) instead of PawsPice (like hospice) at first and wondered if it was a disease I hadn't heard of. 😂

I'd love to do pawspice once my current kitties leave us. (One is too spicy and one is too shy for roomies.)

Why is Pawspice important for you?

Because contrary to popular rhetoric, making the decision to let a pet go isn’t easy. Especially with modern vetmed.

Everyone can use a little help and support in these decisions.

Tonight is about wait and see. Wait and see if things rebound. Wait and see if he’s got an other miracle in him.

It’s tempered by the knowledge that things have gotten harder for him this last year. #pawspice

And off we go. Dropped biz cards at my vet’s office today. Nervous, a serious dash of imposter syndrome, and excited.

I spend a lot of time with death. Death isn’t an adversary in this house. It’s a friend. Death is part of living, and in a lot of situations can be welcomed and celebrated.

We don’t fear death here. We invite it right in. Death generally means an end that leads to meeting someone new. #pawspice

Pawspice conversations are never easy when you’re helping someone losing their first ever pet.

Walking someone through the process when you care about them is brutal.

It has been a beast of a day y’all.

This means most of my fostering is hospice informed. Everything I do is focused on a mix of quality of life vs quantity. The idea is maximize one day at a time, see what happens.

It serves me well, and over the years about half of my hospice cats have moved on to forever homes. #pawspice

This just means she’s shifting back into a more active monitoring situation. Not gonna lie, young Pawspice cats suck. Because usually the medical issues they face will require you make an end of life decision before they hit conventional QOL indicators that you normally look at. 5/

So why am I fixating on a potential negative outcome for Max? After all, positive attitude, chin up, etc

This is where being hospice informed comes in.

His quality of life score has been on a slow, steady drop since last August. #pawspice

Max is one of those cats. He came here, on death’s doorstep. That first night I told him “if you want to stay, we’ll fight. If it’s time to go, that’s okay. Your call.”

Today at the ER I told him- “I don’t want to let you go like this. Please don’t make me. But if it’s time, it’s okay.” #pawspice

So one of the things that’s critical in dealing with a Pawspice situation is giving yourself time and space to grieve before and after. Mom’s cat Homer (the guy in the Thanksgiving pjs) has pivoted today and I expect his time is pretty limited.

Even though it’s expected, it always hits. 1/

So back on my Pawspice horse this week. Homer is a 14 year old cat with wicked hyperthyroid, feline herpes, and a recently diagnosed oral mass. He’s bouncing between 4-4.5 pounds.

He’s been in palliative care mode for about 9 months. I legit didn’t expect him to make it this far. 1/
