Thanks to the 405 interior, the 1600RD, launched in 1998, was more luxurious and well-equipped than the Paykan could dream of. State-owned Iran Khodro sold the car as a bridge between the Paykan and 'proper' front-wheel-drive 405-based models, which it also built.

Factoid: Oct 1966 & while it looks like the driver took a wrong turning somewhere (& asking for help), little did anyone realise the Hunter would stay in production until 1979 & as the Paykan in Iran until 2005…

It’s actually a Dodge & it’s from South Africa.

In 1975 this Hunter-based pick-up (or bakkie) was launched & named the Husky (a nod to the old Hillman small estate name used btwn 1953-70)…

When Peugeot took over the assets of Chrysler Europe in 1978 it inherited the contract which saw Hillman Hunter kits exported from the UK to Iran, creating the Paykan. Two decades later came this bizarre Peugeot 1600RD, a 405 body switched to rwd using the old 1598cc Chrysler UK engine. #weirdcarbs🧵

The 1960s assembly deal with the government of the Shah of Iran was an enduring legacy of the old Rootes Group, and it remarkably survived the Iranian Revolution and the turbulent years beyond. The Hunter-based Paykan changed little, surviving into the 21st century.
