Reviewers on Reviewing: in the this roundtable discussion, @chloroformtea.bsky.social asks @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social, @danhartland.bsky.social, and @princejvstin.com about the effects of payrates (and lack thereof) in the SFF reviewing scene.
Reviewers on Reviewing: Paying for Reviews
In 2025, ARB contributor Roseanna Pendlebury arranged a series of roundtables with SFF reviewers, originally intended for Nerds of a Feather. For some involved publishing reasons, this wound up bei…

Hard same. If you don't list your payrates I assume you're up to something sketchy.
I need magazines to publish their rates of pay for me to sub there. I'm sorry. I cannot recommend magazines even in this time of everything closing that don't list their rates of pay because I can't guarantee to people I'm reccing the mag to that everyone is receiving the same payment.

I'm unsure of their payrates, perhaps we could see some information.

iirc subtember used to be that many years ago, but twitch gutted it because it was too lucrative for the biggest partners who don't have dogshit payrates

But what sources told me, the magazines will remain in print and the current editors will be retained. As for payrates and contract rights for stories, we'll have to wait for that info. 4/

Remember that big news @michaeljdeluca.bsky.social has been mumbling about? It happened: Reckoning has received a substantial grant from ARLA, allowing us to significantly raise payrates AND produce a new special issue! Some details here, more forthcoming: reckoning.press/big-news-arl...

Honestly, yes. While I love the act of writing, writing and "being a writer" aren't the same. Do I love submitting my work for the judgment of others? Do I love the payrates? Do I enjoy all the things between "I have just written" and "people can read it"? Taking it
Too Seriously isn't good for us.
You got into this because you love reading, not because you love scaling pyramid schemes of late stage capitalism. Somewhere in between that tragic wasteland are the bodies of millions of writers who tried before you! Live forever, no problem, it's only creative writing

Granted, the next logical step in our cultural evolution should be something similar to the Nordic economy (higher payrates, free/affordable healthcare, extended vacations, etc) but a money-free society should be the end goal for humankind until the sun explodes.

Again, the devil is in the details and we'll have to see what the official announcement says, along with the long-term plans for the magazines, contract terms and payrates.

As someone who both reads these magazines and publishes fiction in them, for now I'm optimistic. 9/9

Does anyone want to say their pay per hour pays are better or worse than a musician?

He's doing that whole, deleting tweets thing, to make it seem like his words are just being twisted too. So people saying it's unhealthy to work 80hr weeks for these payrates isn't worth it, are looking petty, so i think screencaping him here has purpose.

About time. If you are considered old enough to vote, enlist in the military, legally buy alcohol, get a tattoo, and watch a R-rated film, among other things, then you should be paid an adult wage. #wages #auspol #income #payrates

Support for Reckoning has flagged a bit since our 2022 fundraiser. We don't want to roll back payrates--we want to pay more, so more marginalized folks can have room to write about environmental justice and teach us how to be better! Please help if you can? reckoning.press/one-more-cal...

I hate asking for money. We asked for money in 2022 and it was rough: a lot of work, a lot of feeling sorry for pressuring people in those ridiculously hard times. But we managed, and it let us raise ...

Both these places were my "dream jobs" when I was younger. Then I met and spoke to people once I was in the industry, who had worked at both these places...and the payrates and workplace stories shocked me.

Unless this announcement comes with a pledge of massively expanded and funded training, plus enhanced payrates and employment conditions, for care workers, it's no more than pandering to the racists and hugely counterproductive.

Now, the next thing is that would I go for an instrumentation job and leave my AutoCAD drafting job? It depends really. I'll still apply for instrumentation jobs and see what offers are available. I'll then compare the benefits and payrates and see which would be the better pick.

I can’t think of a part of the tech industry degree programs haven’t destroyed. In a more ideal world retraining would be free. Job placement would exist. Instead we have cycles of degree rushes, unpaid/low-paid internships/short term contractors and suppressed payrates, poorly spec’d positions

China is way better at the actual physical aspects of manufacturing most stuff because they've been doing it very intensively for decades! We haven't! It's not all just payrates or whatever!

This article is interesting because it illustrates the underlying factors that bedevil writing as an artform and as a job. Writers will write regardless of pay, suppressing payrates. And commercial writing both supports and undermines writing as an artform. It's unsustainable and inequitable.

In the future, we're going to see more closing, and some maybe dropping their payrates to cover the issues.

If you want to write novels, write novels. Will it take longer to get published? Yes. Because novels are longer. But if you don't love to read and write short stories, why do that to yourself

The deeply romanticized view of mag heyday era payrates given to the vanishingly small group of highly in-demand lit writers forgets the bone-crushing poverty under which most writers relying solely on shorts lived.

It's a beautiful dream. But unless you were already famous, not really doable.
