The history of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and of its headquarters, the #PeacePalace, are indissociable. Shortly after the creation of the #PCA during the First #HaguePeaceConference in 1899, the Court's founding nations decided to build a dedicated courthouse to encourage States to resolve their disputes peacefully. At the Second Hague Peace Conference in 1907, French delegate Baron d’Estournelles proposed that all participating States contribute resources toward the construction of the PCA's Peace Palace. His suggestion was warmly received, and the PCA's founding States sent materials and gifts showcasing the finest examples of their national craftsmanship for the construction of the PCA’s headquarters. Completed in 1913, the Peace Palace's rich interiors feature diverse artistic treasures from the PCA’s founding nations, such as silk tapestries from Japan, a Hereke rug from Türkiye and Ming dynasty vases from China, as well as marble from Italy, granite from Norway and Sweden, rosewood from Brazil, and a clock from Switzerland — each symbolizing the shared commitment to peace and justice. To this day, from its headquarters at the Peace Palace, the Permanent Court of Arbitration continues to provide services for the resolution of disputes involving various combinations of States, State entities, intergovernmental organizations, and private parties.

⚖️ In 2010, the #PCA opened its Mauritius Office, the Court's first office outside its headquarters at the #PeacePalace in #TheHague, the Netherlands. 🌍 The #PCA Mauritius Office assists in discharging the Secretary-General’s functions under the Mauritian International Arbitration Act 2008 as well as with the promotion of #Mauritius as a venue for #internationalarbitration and #PCA services throughout the region ➡️ bit.ly/4nn8d0j 🏛️ Located at the #PortLouis Waterfront, the office features a modern #arbitration suite, comprising a spacious and multifunctional hearing room and 3 breakout rooms, which are available free of charge in PCA-administered proceedings ➡️ bit.ly/45WacCb 🌟 In 2025, to mark the 125th anniversary of the #PCA & the 15th anniversary of the PCA Mauritius Office, #PCA Secretary-General Marcin Czepelak, together with Ms. Balla Galma Godana, #PCA Legal Counsel and Representative in Mauritius, Mr. Karim M'ziani, #PCA Legal Counsel and MIAC Registrar and other members of the PCA Mauritius Office, welcomed Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and arbitration practitioners in #Mauritius for a special anniversary conference. 💬 The anniversary conference featured a keynote address by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, H.E. Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, along with various presentations and discussions. The event provided an opportunity for the participants to reflect on the #PCA’s rich legacy and its longstanding partnership with Mauritius.
