Some mornings the fog does the work, and the water simply agrees to repeat it.

For #InternationalBatAppreciationDay, please join me in remembering that time in 2021 when New Zealanders showed so much love for local bat pekapeka-tou-roa that they voted it "Bird of the Year" 🦇
Fowl play? 'Bird of the Year' winner in New Zealand contest is a bat
The winner by a nose (not a beak) was pekapeka-tou-roa, also known as New Zealand's long-tailed bat.

In te reo Māori, bats (or ‘pekapeka’) are categorised as ‘manu’, which are any winged creatures including flying insects and birds. It’s for this reason the long-tailed bat was nominated for and then won New Zealand Bird of the Year in 2021. Look at the wee fella!

On International Bat Appreciation Day we celebrate pekapeka 🦇 From winning Bird of the Year to 180+ people gathering for the National Pekapeka Hui, it’s been amazing. Most of all, it’s about growing bat awareness and helping everyday New Zealanders appreciate sharing our world with bats.
