I don’t know.
I’ve spent my life
pursuing truth — oh, countless hours
with straining, gritty eyes
by rushlights flickering
in libraries
and book-lined studies
and monastic cells;
more hours in mental struggle
(undistracted
by the flesh).
And here I lie at last,
in ignorance that’s deeper
than it’s ever been.

If Plato or the Church be right
then I am on the verge
of dwelling in the light,
and gazing at the Form of Truth...
if they be right.
But I don’t know.
