Petiteknit is a Swedish woman. So blonde hair, blue eyes, very Scandinavian in her designs. Quite popular. And yes, the rise of of "clean girl" and minimalism is absolutely a red flag for where the world is.

As a Black, queer woman who knits, I'm not seeing the problem. Her stuff is cute.

When I went back and looked more closely at the most successful designers, many of them have essentially built small companies around themselves. PetiteKnit now has employees; Stephen West has a pattern support team and a yarn business. Other designers work with less formal networks of tech editors, test knitters, photographers, contractors, child care providers and/or home support. The creator might still be the public face of the business, but there's often an entire support system behind that person. So in some ways, we haven't eliminated the institution—we've made individual creators responsible for rebuilding it around themselves. And I think that's another way the window closes. Someone starting out today isn't necessarily competing with another person sitting at home writing knitting patterns; they're competing with mature creator businesses that have had years to build audiences, reputations, and support infrastructure.

A while ago Ravelry updated their algo for the "hot right now" because Romi Hill's shawls were in the top 20 for like 3-4 years. Now it's PetiteKnit who definitely has cute things but they're all for skinny girls and it makes browsing the pattern list irritating.
