Medieval Warfare - Pevensey Bay in East Sussex with Pevensey Castle sited just inland. When William the Conqueror invaded in September 1066 there were no defenders at Pevensey and the bay provided a safe haven for his fleet. Will the invading Franco-Scottish Host be so lucky tomorrow 🤔.

#OnThisDay 1066 William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey. I recently discovered this picture, which looks contemporary. Anyone know the source?

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066!

960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

18. When the fleet caught up, the ships landed at Pevensey and hastily constructed an earthwork to refortify the site due to the seaward breach in the Roman walls. The sea no longer reaches the walls of Pevensey and is now c. 1.5km away due to coastal change over the last 960 years. 18/20

Pevensey Castle, #Sussex, is one of the oldest in the UK - most of its outer walls are #Roman. It saw the first battle of the Norman Conquest. All its #ghosts are martial. They include: A Roman centurion, a medieval army rushing up from the beach and the sounds of ancient fighting.

Today's advent is by Tim Charles. It's a beautiful Barn Owl flying over Pevensey Levels, where we're currently undertaking an ambitious wetland restoration project.

A small fragment of the south wall to the late 3rd century AD Roman coastal fort at Pevensey (ANDERITVM) in East #Sussex

Despite most of the section having fallen, this piece nicely preserves the original facing stones, tile courses and putlog holes for scaffolding

A visit to Pevensey Castle in September.
Started in late 3rd Century #Pevensey is the largest of the #Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ fortresses. In 1066, William the Conqueror landed nearby to begin his invasion of England, and started a #castle utilising the Roman fortress walls.

Sheets of Strawberry Clover #StillFlowering on the Pevensey Levels earlier this week, coping well with the extended drought that's turned much of the grassland from green to gold.

Standing to a height of 8.2m, this projecting tower in the north wall of Pevensey (ANDERITVM) #Roman coastal fort #EastSussex still preserves the outline of a late 3rd century U-shaped window

The window was blocked in 1940 during the insertion of a machine gun post

🌿☕ 'Nacreous' is a wonderful adjective from the Latin nacre, meaning mother of pearl

Often used to describe clouds reflecting the sunlight, creating an ethereal glow ☁️ ☁️ ☁️ 🌈
