🌜🔭The gullible were hooked. Herschel found the pieces amusing, until the gullible came asking questions. #EdgarAllanPoe claimed plagiarism of his earlier story "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall." Despite being hogwash, The Sun never published a retraction.

It works better in Haans Pfaall and The Balloon Hoax and The Maelstrom. The proto-science-fiction stories do well with the analytical descriptions for realism.

Personally, I think this story overlaps into science fiction in which technology can create an entire artificial environment, or at least bend nature to a level of artificial perfection. Though, we don't see that technology so it doesn't work the same way "Haans Pfaall" did as a proto-scifi. /🧵

We know that printers liked working with Poe because his manuscripts were carefully written in clear, easy to read hand writing.

Maybe she didn’t anticipate major changes, or maybe that wasn’t something she wanted to focus on. I read a Poe story from 1835 about traveling to the moon, but they were writing in different contexts and for different audiences. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unp...

Poe admitted though Locke's articles were the more effective hoax compared to his own Hans Pfaall story. Poe said that his mistakes were to publish in a literary journal as opposed to a newspaper; and to include comedic elements rather than staying staunchly serious in the presentation. 🧵
