George MacDonald sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/macdon... died on this day, so here are some of the illustrations from an 1894 edition of his "Phantastes: a Faerie Romance" (Artist: John Bell):

Literally the first English Fantasy Novel for adults, Phantastes, is about a man who meets a fairy, who warns him about two tree monsters, who also talk to him.
boy now that Dov’s got me on DnD talk I am reminded that I’m mad at a tumblr post talking about how “fantasy monsters that can converse with the players are a gameplay contrivance and not a Real Fantasy Thing upstream of the game” and fucking used. Being able to talk to dragons as the example.

The Princess and the Goblin and Phantastes are to me peak Macdonald. I still think they're more like raw ingredients than a meal. But e.g. the ghostly grandmother spinning a web that routes to a ring is so, just, wonderful it justifies the terrible dialog, stiff morals, and thin plot.

Spending a quiet day over the holidays with Phantastes by George MacDonald, and it feels just as magical as ever. Its themes and imagery are timeless, which is why it’s no surprise it inspired writers like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. A true classic worth revisiting.

He’s pretty cool yep. Only slightly racist but a lot less overt about it as Lewis was. George Macdonald remains my favorite Inkling tho. If you’ve never read Lilith or Phantastes I highly recommend as well as his fairy tale short stories

Phantastes, by George MacDonald. C. S. Lewis finally coaxed me into reading this wonderfully hallucinatory novel that feels at times like a grown-up version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice books. There are scenes and images that stun with their dream-like, almost hypnotic power.

Phantastes is a LOT but I enjoyed it.

If you want more highland-centric adventures, pick up one of his romances!

I just use "pre-1950s" to mean the stuff people got up to before Tolkien's work broke huge, when it was often confusing, weird, full of people with weird body types and there was dispute as to what parts were magic, if anything at all. Worm Ourobouros and Phantastes are other ones I dug.
