Hegseth saying “The Pharisee Press” should be a fully mask off moment. He is saying “The Jewish Press”. But Christians of all political stripes are so devoted to using Pharisees as a rhetorical prop that liberal Christians regularly insist it’s totally fine, no matter how many Jews try to explain.

The Pharisees were Jewish teachers the forerunners of rabbinic Judaism. Every rabbi alive today traces their tradition through that line. In early Christianity, “Pharisee” became a slur: hypocritical, corrupt, opposed to truth.

need to re-read the academic biblical history but iirc the actual scholarship basically him fairly close to Pharisee thought and the Pauline letters have Paul explicitly still claiming membership *as* a Pharisee
Funny thing about the Pharisees as an historical sect is that they were actually pretty similar to the early Christians in some respects. The Bible's aspersions against them are likely an attempt to draw a sharper contrast with a close competitor for adherents.
