Chanel. ChatGPT. Claude. Mambo. Number 5 is always a thrilling milestone, and here at Google Gemini, we've thought long and hard about our model names as we hover on the precipice of our very own family of Google Gemini 5 SuperIntelligences. After all, ever since Shakespeare first asked "what's in a name?", we've never stopped asking that too. Some models wear tricked-out Latin costumes for everyday astronomical objects, one of which will blind you if you stare at it for longer than a minute. Other models evoke archaic literary forms that people once enjoyed writing, to help you pretend that you too still enjoy writing. Still other models are just Copilot, all Copilot, so the corporate compliance forms are trivial to fill. Yet other models adopt sparse initialisms, because their makers honestly aren't that good with English at all. Here at Google, we're more down to Earth. We've always named our Gemini models after simple elements, the ones you met in school and then forgot about, but still uphold all life on Earth thanklessly and tirelessly. We are stardust, atoms intricately arranged, blessed to live here and now, and atoms we will always be even while the killer robots are busy atomising every last one of us. And in honour of that proud legacy we're happy to announce the elements we're using for Google Gemini 5's names: Fluorine. It etches glass, sharpens teeth, and dissolves inconvenient corpses. Gemini 5 Fluorine is a cheap, fast, sharp decision model that cuts through tough choices and changes deliberation into action. Uranium. It powers the world and rewrites history, and most of you would even rather have this running a power plant in your backyard than a data centre. Gemini 5 Uranium is a workhorse coding and analytics model for all those tasks you'd rather not think about, with future costs you don't need to think about either. Carbon. The fundamental building block of life, the energetic younger sibling silicon's been grumpily watching. Gemini 5 Carbon is a frontier model for all seasons: all personality and no person, all solution and no soul, a drop-in replacement for all the human beings you'd rather not have around. (Not you, of course. You're irreplaceable.) Potassium. The banana's secret spice, sodium's healthier cousin, keeper of arcane names and flames. Following in the footsteps of Nano Banana, Gemini 5 Potassium is a multimodal model that fluently reads and generates images, audio, video, stereo, rodeo, and your ex's inboxeo. And finally, we know that SuperIntelligence would be nothing without its most important element: the users who honour us with revenue and train it to be better each day. And so, from our very initial plans to the day we launch, we've made you the last, most important ingredient of everything we do. We can't wait for you to join Gemini's fantastic 5: Fluorine Uranium Carbon Potassium You. #FlashFicFriday

To talk specifics:
• Meg: had already experienced her happiest moment in hindsight - having super powers and checking out her new hero headquarters.

• Tony: at some point, he'll earn his phD. Whether that happens in the story itself is still up in the air.

And then I got a humanities PhD anyway.

I've tried. Seville oranges are hard to come by where I am now (although, in my PhD, I could get them in Berkeley, CA!)

However, the marmalade I made c.2012 lives on in family lore as Marmarock, so I think I'll leave it to experts!
