Yes, that variant absolutely exists in the Metamorphoses, but Ovid (my favorite ancient author) freely adapted myths. It's possible that he didn't invent it, but the existing original Greek sources (Hesiod, Pherecydes, Apollodorus, Pausanias) only mention Medusa without giving her an origin story.

it is also a thing where my enemy is both strong and weak in the concept called “splitting”, you do not know what you do not know. All of this is in aristotle and drawing a 2x2 table (for it comes from pythagoras, and Pherecydes of Syros)
