Did you know Savannah Sparrows tend to return each year to the area where they hatched, a tendency called natal philopatry?

Now published! We examine how female competition shapes movement ecology. We provide the first genetic evidence of female philopatry and male-biased dispersal in a socially polyandrous bird species!

On 'Twitter', there's a video of a Black-tailed Godwit from East Anglia (UK) feeding in The Netherlands.
Has it moved?
Will it shortly cross the North Sea to Ouse/Nene Washes?

Philopatry (adults and chciks return to same breeding areas) is a blessing and a curse.
Conservationists know that (most) waders will nest in the same places.
Even if there is no productivity, birds don't move elsewhere.

New paper out! 🦈🥞📡
Using 4 years of acoustic tracking on 179 undulate skates (Raja undulata), we show that fine-scale movement traits (activity + space use) vary consistently among individuals but don’t align with broader philopatry patterns.👀

Individual Variation in Philopatry Is Unrelated to Activity and Space Use in the Undulate Skate Raja undulata
Consistent individual variation in fine-scale movement traits is unrelated to movements occurring at larger spatio-temporal scales in undulate skates (Raja undulata).

The Osprey suffered extensive historical declines throughout Western Europe due to human persecution, and has been slow to recolonise following greater protections due to high rates of natal philopatry and conspecific attraction.

The ringing of chicks and nesting Arctic Terns in Northumberland reveals high natal philopatry but dispersal to non-natal sites is mainly by females. Recruitment is not affected by the presence of public visitors and females breed at an earlier age than males.
