“Mamdani” is perfectly phonetic so I’d say these guys must be willfully mispronouncing except mine is perfectly phonetic too and it’s never stopped anyone from going on a dipthong sidequest

They should sell product placement in the NATO phonetic alphabet. X could be Xbox. C is Cheerios now. What does it matter.

It's so embarrassing to hear the glee in the ESPN Panel's voices talking about how they refuse to learn how to say Luukkonen. For the number of three syllable last names, Finnish or non, in the league, grow up

It’s phonetic. What’s this guy’s problem?

‘Phonetic’ is not.
‘Abbreviation’ is 12 letters.
‘Thesaurus’ doesn’t have a synonym.

Say what you will about English, but it has a sense of humor.

It's a writing system based 1stly on an imported writing system ultimately incompatible with any language but its own, 2ndly on a phonetic attempt to correct for that 1st problem, & tertiarily as a 3rd phonetic set to show specifically foreign words.

Of course it's a hot mess.

The simple solution to that is to ask every graduate to provide a phonetic spelling along with their formal name.

Which reminds me of how much I hate when English speakers use Þ, Ð and Ö as a stylistic choice. BLAÐE is pronounced like "blaeughe"*.

*Not actually phonetic spelling, just MY phonetic spelling.
Ah yes, the "Thdpsssps"

A is for Alfa

Russian (Soviet) Pr.705 Alfa class submarine.

(Alfa, spelt with an F, is phonetic alphabet for A, so the NATO code name is A-class but no one says it that way any more.

"Y'all" isn't an accent, it's a plural second-person pronoun (albeit one associated with specific local variants of English) and that spelling is how it's spelled, it's not a phonetic rendering of a particular accent.

The NATO Phonetic Alphabet (ALFA, BRAVO, CHARLIE etc.) is neither a phonetic alphabet, nor a product of NATO.

I've sifted through loads of old documents to find its true origins and, OSCAR MIKE GOLF, is it fascinating.
