#phoresy
There are several species that practice phoresy - hitch-hiking on other inverts. I've only seen them on beetles but they are regularly recorded on flies inc hoverflies and even on harvestmen.

Who's got 👍 👍 & grabs #flies to travel? This guy!!! It fell off the timber fly: bsky.app/profile/bert...

Someone also found a stilt-legged fly, #Micropezidae, w/another little #pseudoscorpion hitching a ride. This type of #phoresy (traveling on other animals) is common. Costa Rica #FlySchool2026

~35 Myr ago, a female pseudoscorpion grabbed a fly's hind leg and got caught in resin, with a brood sac of 12 eggs still attached. µCT let us count every one. 🦂

Wow, that's a more sinister form of phoresy than I'm accustomed to thinking about!

I'm not the only one who loves ant mimic salticids 👀
That weird little thing hugging the back of the spider's head is a mantidfly baby - it will remain attached to this female Peckhamia until she lays her eggs, and then it'll borrow some eggs permanently. #PHORESY!

This is how you micros are getting into my house, isn't it? Taking a page from the pseudoscorpion book and sneaking in riding on a larger bug!

(If you do not know about these small ones, look them up. Very weird and kind of cute)

A cheeky bit of midweek mite-on-mite action!

Mites are masters at hitchhiking, or 'phoresy'. This oribatid mite is being taken for a ride by a juvenile dust mite, which is using it to get to greener pastures. When you're so tiny, it pays to outsource your means of travel!

Today we feature a pseudoscorpion. These arachnids have venomous scorpion-like pincers but no tail or stinger. Many pseudoscorpions practice phoresy — hitchhiking on larger animals such as beetles, flies, birds, and small mammals to reach new habitats without harming their hosts.

We are delighted to announce Dr. Owen Seeman, from the Queensland Museum, Australia, as one of our speakers.

His lecture, “Phoresy: an acarological journey from its purest form to its peculiar fringes,” will take place on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 during the XVII International Congress of Acarology.

New #NaturalHistoryNote in Austral Ecology:

Treefrogs in Brazil's Cerrado were found carrying tiny ostracods, providing the first evidence of phoresy in this species = Frogs may help disperse aquatic invertebrates between bromeliads & other habitats🐸

"By attaching themselves to a fly, pseudoscorpions can effectively outsource dispersal – reaching new habitats they could never access on their own."

Phoresy! Some species (e.g. Tree Chernes) use this method to travel to new sites. As Norfolk pseudoscorpion recorder @vannabartlett.bsky.social will be interested. Please do submit the record.

We've seen this on beetles twice now but not on flies (though it's a known phenomenon).

Phoresy.

I've seen them hitching rides on flies but a weevil, that's extra cool!
