Not directly on AO3, thankfully. But big vulnerabilities were discovered in PHP, one of the foundational programming languages of the internet. PHP is derived from the language AO3 uses, Ruby on Rails

cryptos awesome its like cash but vulnerable to php security flaws

??? no it's not lol, PHP predates Ruby on Rails by a decade
October 29, 2026 at 7:07 PM
I think you mean "Ruby is derived from PHP" because PHP is MUCH older than Ruby (and Rails for that matter)
October 29, 2026 at 7:06 PM
Wouldn't be from the PHP exploit because the AO3 runs on Ruby on Rails, not PHP. But there have been a LOT of new exploits discovered this month. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_O...

Likely a Cyber Attack. Probably via the PHP exploit.

Gyges.

Ruby on Rails *is* a PHP derivative.

it is SO joever

Wait, AO3 runs on Ruby? There's your problem right there.

PHP and Ruby aren't really related outside that both are similar to Perl. PHP went with easy in line syntax, and Ruby went with Black magic.

PHP ≠ Ruby.

The PHP apocalypse finally caught up to them?

I went on TWiT yesterday to chat about PHP-ocalypse, the two bugs in PHP that threatened to burn down the web but didn't.

My takeaways: Vulnerability coordinated disclosure worked in this case; AI is undoubtedly changing hacking & cyber; and why we got lucky this time — but maybe not so much next.
PHP had a rough week for security, but the pain isn't over yet
A wave of mass website hacks was largely averted. Here are the main takeaways from the PHP-ocalypse — with bonus video.
