#phytoncides
Birds are mostly territorial. When forests are cut, they can't just move to a new one because birds already established there will fight them off.

Deer, foxes, rabbits, lynxes, rodents, insects, plants, and fungi have also lost their homes.

Trees emit phytoncides that are beneficial to humans.

Hugging trees is heart healthy & it lowers the stress hormone cortisol, releasing oxytocin & boosting natural immune compounds called phytoncides. This tactile practice calms the nervous system, lowers blood pressure & improves mental clarity. The earth delights in your love & appreciation of trees.

Ok, wrt inhalation of the plant oils/phytoncides I should have said it *can* trigger a drop in cortisol of 25-30% (in academic experiments). The actual decrease triggered by a posy on your bedside table will be lower, but will be still v helpful for day to day mental health 🌿
Posting later than I planned but these are the ways in which bringing some flowers, berries, autumn leaves 🍁etc. from your garden/walk really can alleviate stress & lift mood. A few stumbles bc confidence=bit wobbly but if you make a posy maybe post it below? Seeing it will help others’ brains too 🌿

@interactions.bsky.social Thanks for undermining what I’ve posted.30% is in Japanese academic experiments when individuals inhale phytoncides directly. Don’t know what to say other than that, except I’m trying to help people’s mental health, what were you doing there exactly? Negating my content yes?
October 22, 2026 at 9:12 AM
& I repeat, the 25-30% was in experiments in which volunteers inhaled high concentrations of phytoncides,a situation almost impossible to emulate with a posy in a house. You didn’t take that on board when you doubled down though. Perhaps you could now…OR you could continue to undermine. Your choice.

Ooh, so lovely! I was reading again about phytoncides, which explains why I love walking amongst the trees in settings like these. The ultimate stress-buster!

Part of this is thought to come from phytoncides, aromatic compounds released by trees that you simply breathe in.

The effect may outlast the walk. Elevated immune activity has been reported for weeks afterwards, and similar time in a city centre didn't produce the same response.

RT @RachelZader: Visiting a forest can raise your killer T cells by 50% for up to a MONTH after, probably bc you breathe in phytoncides from the trees.
So hiking once a month can literally can help protect against cancer, lower stress, regulare your immune system, and lower inflammation!

Trees release compounds called phytoncides which can enhance mood and improve sleep. Phytoncides may even help prevent cancer. And native trees are brilliant for all sorts of wildlife - so let’s plant more trees, and cherish those we have already! 🌳

Wow... the arguement for Touch-Grass just got science'd.

As someone who grew up in a deep-woods home, I always thought it was a wave of full-body nostalgia being in the forest. Phytoncides might be part of that! (AND ITS A GOOD THING)

Why do we need healthy treescapes, woods & forests, why do we need nature to thrive?

It's spent billions of years evolving to care, needing nature as sustaining ecosystems engineers. We're so detached from being nature.

Research led by Dr. Qing Li found that trees release natural airborne compounds called phytoncides. When humans breathe forest air, these chemicals enter the bloodstream, resulting in lower stress hormones and measurable, positive immune changes that can last for days.
