It was raining and in the upper 40s (F) tonight so we went looking for migrating mole salamanders. No luck finding any sallies, but our first herp of the year is this pickerel frog.

12/20/25’s WiP sketch, finished. *snort*sniffle*🤧🐸💜
A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a Xmas pickerel frog, sleeping in front of presents and a Christmas tree. The frog is gold/tan, with thick dark brown lines along their back and legs. Their red Santa hat is draped over a purple present with pink ribbon. Behind that to the left, is a blue present with a yellow ribbon, and a sparkly purple gift bag with pink tissue paper. Behind it all are branches of a Christmas tree, with lights and ornaments. The floor is green, with white writing under the frog that says “What frog is this, who laid to rest, under the tree is sleeping?”. Frog photo reference: Gary Fleming, from “A Guide to the Frogs and Toads of Virginia” Special Publication #3 by the Va Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (date unknown, about 2010).

ℹ️ FYI (For Your Identification): This little guys is often mistaken for the leopard frog, but the shape of their spots is a great identifier. The pickerel's spots are a little more rectangular and are usually in neat little rows, comparatively!
