a few years ago I found that non-periodic restoration activities can promote native woody species encroachment in California coastal prairies, specifically by Baccharis pilularis (coyote brush). This may suggest a need for stewardship of coastal grasslands!

Red fescue or Festuca rubra, a fabulous bunchgrass that's rhizomatous (spreads with lateral roots/stems and makes new sprouts further away from the mother plant). Makes beautiful clumps for soil stabilization and great wildlife forage - a great lawn when mowed! #californianativeplants #nativeplants

Small bit of joy from a couple weeks ago (still there though now): some coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) cuttings from the bushes in our hellstrip have rooted! A couple previous tries failed.
Coyote brush cuttings in a pot of soil, green leaves and stems. Roots growing out of the bottom of the pot with coyote brush cuttings. They also grew threw some maple leaves.
