Pinholing

I heard that NPS staffers were flagging pinholing of the surface as it was being applied, which is what happens when a polyurea coating is applied to badly prepped concrete. In normal times that'd be a stop-work.

This is in addition to likely surface prep issues with the concrete, suggested by "pinholing" NPS staff flagged during the application process. 3/

Pin-holes, what they are and how to prevent them.
PINHOLES are small craters which form in the applied product during the drying process and which, apart from an aesthetic problem, can also cause fun

These aren't part of my 100 ugly cups series, they are just three not-quite-reitz wine cups I made for my husband, brother, and self.

A spot of pinholing to clear the bonkers out of my head (I do wonder if the heat messed with my meds - I was nuts but not in a regular way. It was more just mania). Quite pleased since it's been ages since I pinholed. #BelieveInFilm

Pinholing is common when you apply a coating where the concrete is offgassing, like when the concrete is curing or when absorbed water is evaporating. They probably applied the coating on a hot day as the temperature was increasing without sufficient time for the substrate to dry out.

Tail is worst and is fully surrounded by glaze even though thin. The manufacturer says to only glaze the outside of a vessel to avoid pinholing because it needs to offgas. This seems to mean: the glaze is best applied to one side of areas where you'd hit air within a cm if you drilled into it

hmm, sources I could find say standard DVDs are good for 30-45 years so these should all be fine, I don't see any pinholing or discoloration but I'll check the oldest ones before I go

Uneven layering, not enough Crawls

Cup 4: Wasabi Celadon and Black Crawls.

It’s called “pinholing” in home canning circles, not sure about commercial canning. Half the people in a canning group will ask “omg what is this black discoloration on the inside of my canning lid” and be told, well, sometimes acids will do that but sometimes they get crazy and make a hole…
