I am currently in Rome, eating no small amount of gelato, and were Pino Gelato located here it would easily be regarded as one of the better places to get gelato.

In 2014, a guy named Sandro sat next to me on a flight from NYC to PDX. Told me he just spent 6 months learning to make gelato in Italy & planned to own his own shop in Portland.
My wife & I gave him a ride from the airport. He invited us to early tastings at his house.
Later, he opened Pinolo.

10 olive 10 capperi uno spicchio d’aglio, tre acciughe sott’olio, un pugnetto di uva passa, semi di finocchietto, qualche pinolo, una scatoletta di sgombro sott’olio, un cucchiaio di concentrato di pomodoro (ho finito anche i pomodorini).

So much bad/false gelato in the U.S., I agree… Pinolo Gelato in Portland, OR is my favorite (and I’ve had gelato in Chicago, Philly, NYC, LA, and SF)… if you’re ever there, I recommend you check it out!
