#placeholder-games
Great take from @tietuesday.bsky.social about AI being used for "Placeholder art" in video games.

love taking songs from other games and putting it into something i work on as a placeholder

"we only use it for pre-production and placeholders" because games NEVER release with any placeholder or prepro art in it

GENTE? O ícone que a Epic Games usou como placeholder (espaço reservado) para o Laser do Destino Mítico. 😂

I do think it is a bad look to use generative AI art for placeholder assets in a video game because if you've been in the games industry for five minutes you know that placeholder assets ship all the time

added a placeholder page for #projectts on my website. might as well lol

I love how the gaming community has decided that decompiling and making wacky hybrid games is one of the good uses for AI (but all other AI is bad and unethical especially if you use it for one placeholder asset!)

a couple of stickmen swordfighting in mspaint that's a placeholder, AI-gen shit has no use case for this & only leads to shit like this being snuck into games only for publishers to throw their hands up and say "oops you got us, that was a placeholder" only in the case of being caught

If you use Gen AI images as placeholder art in your games... You've missed the whole point of what placeholder art is. Overly rendered images from LLMs is the exact opposite of what you want.

Trust me. Years long Lead Artist & Art Director in games here 👋.

Like even if i give all these companies the benefit of the doubt and accept it was there as a placeholder... THEN IT'S A FUCKING HORRIBLE PLACEHOLDER BECAUSE IT KEEPS BEING LEFT IN THE GAMES!
At best you are ignorant/lazy, at worst you are being malicious against your players!

The "ai is just a placeholder" in RELEASED games is definitely gonna be a trend.

Idgaf if a game gets dragged down for it. You're valid for abstaining from these games.

This is so stupid. “Placeholder should look placeholder” is Games Production 101.
Ubisoft admits AI-generated loading screen "slipped through" into final build of Anno 117: Pax Romana

It's funny how before gen ai we never used to see placeholder assets left in released games.

It's almost like the gen ai stuff isn't actually placeholder and these devs just hoped no one would notice or care....

“But surely in large scale high budget games nothing ever ships as placeholder”
The use case I often see bandied about for AI in game dev is using it as a placeholder but the likelihood that you’re going to ship a game with AI placeholder crap is way higher than a texture that says “Lorem Ipsum” on it and the blowback for getting caught is infinitely higher.
I'm getting real tired of not being able to trust that a video game doesn't have AI crap in it:

i hate that any new games i see, even indie, i have to sit and think "i really hope they didn't use any gen a/i in the dev process. placeholder assets included"
March 3, 2026 at 6:17 PM
When I worked on games, placeholder assets were solid-color with "PLACEHOLDER" on them, or MS paint drawings. For text, all caps writing indicating it was a placeholder.

You don't need to use digital asbestos as a placeholder. You're choosing to support a genuinely evil industry. For what?
We’ve seen a wide range of accusations regarding the use of AI-generated content in The Alters, and we feel it’s important to clarify our approach and give you more context.

I bucked the trend by releasing games with their bad placeholder titles.

Wishlist SPACE HOLE on Steam, please.
fact: every shipped indie game is still called "game_test3" on the developer's hard drive

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter pre-orders are up at VGP with a September 25 release date (possibly placeholder—but pretty specific):

GenAI isn't a useful placeholder when making video games. It doesn't save time, and it actively stifles the creative process.

Here's what local devs think: @untitledlucegame.bsky.social @mickey.ghoulish.com.au @madmacsfuryroad.bsky.social @theboyofcheese.bsky.social @tdogextreme.bsky.social + more.
What local game developers really think about using GenAI artworks as 'placeholders' | ScreenHub: Film, TV, Streaming and Games
Video game development is increasingly under scrutiny, as some developers begin integrating GenAI as 'placeholder' for tone and idea generation.

For games especially, being anti-AI absolutists matters. Barks, "placeholder art," wherever they think they can get away with has to be treated like rat feces in food. Some coders will keep using it until the pricing adjusts and no one will disclose, but "slop doesn't sell" is the only way forward.

Xbox has plenty of games! 😍

Finally finished this. It's been done for a while I just never got around to finalizing the placeholder shading.

Done for a comic event where I wanted to make a Wormverse mock up inspired by PC98 games.

using gen AI for your game *even* for placeholder art is still completely unethical and you're not better than people using genAI for non placeholder elements of their games

it's still stealing from artists and participating into a huge environment disaster you can avoid to participate to
