Tori Amos - Night of Hunters (2011) youtu.be/rkV4THMO9Gc?...

Ending as I began, with Tori, duetting with her niece Kelsey on a song that feels both ancient & new, a variation on a Scarlatti tune & a plainchant, from her most moving album of the last 25 years.

Ahead of their self-titled debut on NNA Tapes, experimental duo Bow and Arrow(experimental musician and composer 𝗟𝗲𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗶 and guitarist 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲) unveil 'Gem'. It is a quiet study in dread and patience.
Bow and Arrow - Gem (TS Premiere)
Bow and Arrow trace eerie, electroacoustic plainchant into something quietly devotional.

In 1590, a French clergyman invented the serpent to strengthen church choirs singing plainchant. Two centuries later, Berlioz called its tone barbaric, fit only for druids, and kept it for one use: doubling the Dies Irae in Masses for the Dead.

I grew up singing polyphony and plainchant in a cathedral choir. I can’t say that I’m at all religious, but the gratitude I feel for having encountered that music at a young age, and for the ways it continues to nourish me, is simply endless.

I feel that way about pedants who insist on “sol” when using solfege; I only accept their “but it’s the proper syllabification of the word in the original plainchant blah blah” argument only if they swap out “do” for “ut” too

I'm not familiar with this, but the pseudo-Medieval plainchant style, complete with parallel 5ths and octaves, is interesting. The declamation of the text is very Carl Orff-like, and reminds me of mvmt 1 of his 1936 cantata Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna"), beginning with the words "Semper crescis."

Mine is more like Mattins (plainchant), Mass (plainchant and a hymn or two), Evensong (plainchant)

One thing I’m 100% convinced of is that the Angels and Saints in Heaven praise God in every single music style. They have eternity, they’re not limiting themselves to plainchant and ‘hymn-sounding’ music

OK some takes from me! Note: I played piano for MANY years, but am almost completely chorally untrained.

- 296 seems like it should be easy but in fact is really hard
- Plainchant is super difficult for congregations unless sung weekly
- Anything David Hurd ever wrote can be yeeted (SORRY HURDITES)

(This specific context is basically literally where my spouse is today except even smaller choir, and yes, actually plainchant has been really critical to the success of that choir. Unison, but with enough challenge to feel satisfying, but room for the organ to add color)

Yeah, no, the plainchant is definitely a valid concern, and that's really a matter of setting it up stylistically, too. It's a totally different experience than "regular" hymns.

There is also even more plainchant than I remembered

Agree that plainchant is unfamiliar for folks, although I'm consistently surprised at *how* unfamiliar - like not knowing pange lingua and stuff like that.

Yeah, that I don't agree with (I also love Abbot's Leigh, but those intervals are tough for untrained musicians). It's not the whole hymnal by any means, and every hymnal has its challenges. I think H1982 has more plainchant than many others, which can be tricky for those new to it.

100% literally true, the music has always come first, and music theory chases after, trying to describe it

so people can talk about it better, or learn how to achieve similar effects

From plainchant to species counterpoint rules to Shenkerian analysis to 12 tone methods to jazz theory, etc etc

Are you curious about #EarlyModern #beguines? Specifically their musical worship? Do you love #plainchant? Are you in Sweden?

Come to Saint Lars’ Catholic Church on Culture Night (Sept. 12) for a little concert of beguine music followed by compline!

Just to say, if you are in N London tonight and at a loose end, why not go along to this #nuntastic show at the Arcola Theatre? Saw it last night and it was hugely entertaining. Went in unsure (you all know how I feel about H), came away bloody loving it. 1/ www.arcolatheatre.com/event/bitter...
Bitter Visions: By Order of Hildegard - Arcola Theatre

Packing lunch and cycling and prep for Mass and serving at Mass and setting up the fan and Soup Kitchen stuff and lunch and lots and lots of cleaning up a picture of some plainchant to make it readable and requiem prep and cantoring/serving at requiem mass and chatting afterwards and and and and.

What is a “chant”? From football terraces to political demonstrations to playground rhymes and perhaps even ancient plainchant, we have all chanted in one form or another. Big “just do the plainchant” moment. But even if you don’t, the service music should be so standard that everyone just knows it in their bones

The cover fronting "Evensong: Children's Short Works" is a woodcut-style drawing — dense, medieval in feeling — set against Mother Bellwether's plainchant bed. Old hand, old ink, older music. https://thehumfm.com
