And I swear to god for people who come from somewhere with lots more trains than Americans have, they nearly fall over when the train moves at approximately the same rate as people on the PlaneTrain at the Atlanta airport. Just walking in, holding on to nothing, and then nearly taking out everyone

He’ll never be the ATL PlaneTrain

The PlaneTrain, as we like to call it

This is why I like the PlaneTrain/pedestrian tunnel combo at ATL. You can choose to walk if you want.

The grid-like layout with the PlaneTrain ”spine” perpendicular to the straight concourses is so easy to wrap your head around. The real challenge is landside with parking/roads/security/Uber but once you’re through the checkpoint it’s easy.

Too bad the Roosevelt boulevard subway guy isn’t on bluesky yet - we should be building this “planetrain” instead of another boring subway

I was that one dude, of any race/ethnicity, wearing a mask on the ATL PlaneTrain last month

A reminder to new users here:

Careful: doors are closing and will not reopen. Please wait for the next train.

The world's longest corridor is one of my favorite features of Hartsfield-Jackson lol, but the PlaneTrain will very much get you to baggage claim in like 2 min if you don't like the walk (and has higher ridership than some entire public transit systems)!

To state the obvious:

The airport’s layout is optimized for connections, not for local traffic. The concourses+PlaneTrain is the airport equivalent of Manhattan+subway for transfer passengers, but the domestic TSA checkpoint is basically a single Lincoln Tunnel bottleneck for local departures.

Great episode @papadimitriou.bsky.social & Vinod!

Especially loved the Delta/ATL/757/Costa Rica stories.

Fun fact: my former boss was “in the room” in the 1970s when they decided to make the ATL “PlaneTrain” underground instead of above-ground. They basically invented the modern mega-hub layout!

Why you should sometimes avoid the otherwise legendary PlaneTrain (there are other reasons too).

I walk to Terminal B and do not take the Atlanta PlaneTrain; he who takes the Atlanta PlaneTrain has forgotten the face of his father.

LiG - hanging out at ATL early for dinner before our flight, only to have the PlaneTrain fail about 3’ past the doors. 10 min before they could come and manually open the doors for us to exit. Good thing we were at our destination terminal.

I'm probably just blending DFWs Skytrain with the Planetrain in my head.
