The Plaskett Fire moves closer to U.S. Highway 1 in Monterey County on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026. The wildfire had burned 2,774 acres after it was first reported Wednesday near Forest Road, east of Los Burros Road in the Plaskett area of Big Sur.

Highway 1 will shut down today at 1 p.m. for "critical backburning operations" although those may be delayed due to the challenging weather forecast.
