The famous figures from Pompeii, often mistaken for petrified human bodies, are actually plaster casts made by archaeologists. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it buried the Roman city under layers of volcanic ash and pumice that hardened around the victims. As soft tissues decomposed over centuries, they left behind hollow cavities in the solidified ash. In 1863, Giuseppe Fiorelli developed an innovative technique to fill these voids with liquid plaster. Once hardened, the surrounding material was removed, revealing detailed replicas of the victims in their final poses, complete with expressions of agony, clothing folds, and body positions. The original skeletal remains rest inside many of these plaster shells, as confirmed by modern CT scans and DNA analysis. These analyses have also corrected some assumptions, such as revealing that a famous 'mother and child' embrace actually involved a man. Over 1,000 victims have been identified, but only around 100 casts were created; others remain as skeletons for study. The technique does not apply to Herculaneum, where extreme heat vaporized soft tissues, leaving only bones. The casts provide haunting insights into the human tragedy of the eruption and are displayed at the Pompeii Archaeological Park, including notable groups like the Garden of the Fugitives. This method has allowed modern science to study not just the disaster but also the lives interrupted by it, blending archaeology with forensic techniques for deeper historical understanding.
