Latest #watercolor is the weird (saying a lot by amphibian standards) temnospondyl, #Platyhystrix. The crest on the back is made of elongated armor plates, not extended vertebra like most other sailbacked animals. #paleoart

Dimetrodon attacks a congregation of breeding Platyhystrix. Edaphosaurs watch. It's really intriguing to me how all of these Permian Southwestern animals convergently evolved sailbacks.

Platyhystrix was one of the many - curiously, unrelated - animals with a sail from around this time. Was it a thermoregulation device? An ornamental feature to impress mates? Maybe both? Regardless, it probably didn't make hiding from predators any easier.

Looks like it's that time of the year to pull this out again (with updated speen art)

In the early Permian, a little less than 300 million years ago, life on land was rich and diverse, but most of the animals were still a bit... goofy.

A scene from Texas Red Beds, with Eryops chasing after a Platyhystrix, with various flora and invertebates from the formation.

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart:

@maijakarala.bsky.social’s Platyhystrix, @chrisdipiazza.bsky.social’s Cryolophosaurus, Arthur Hayward’s Styracosaurus, and Ely Kish’s Triceratops!

Took me days to do this piece. Finally getting my hands on the weird dissorophoid Platyhystrix rugosus. First time trying to create a scene, pls do leave appreciative comment if you can...

Clumsy Hunter

In the early Permian, a little less than 300 million years ago, life on land had long been rich and diverse, but most of the animals were still a bit... goofy.

Here's Eryops chasing down a Platyhystrix in a lush riverside forest in what is now Texas, some 290 million years ago.

to celebrate #froggyfriday, meet platyhystrix, a temnospondyl from the late carboniferous and early permian, known for its distinctive sail-backed appearance that echoes basal synapsids like dimetrodon and edaphosaurus

From 2017: Platyhystrix wanders out of a Permian swamp next to the roots of a fallen tree. This ancient dissorophid #amphibian is only known from its sail, so the closely related genus Cacops provides the rest of the body. #paleoart #fossil #paleontology #sciart
