Third year of growth of 7 hornbeam saplings for pleaching into a “hedge in the air”. The lower branches have been successively pruned and the leader is now at the top height and will be pruned in autumn to encourage the laterals. In a few more years should look like this! #pleaching #hornbeam

The Hedge laying competition in co Kildare yesterday was fascinating.
Got to watch the teams pleaching & binding and check out the regeneration in the hedges the #hedgelaying from two years ago.
Loved to see a range of age groups keeping the art of living fences alive.

An old #Devon hedge laid a long time ago. The horizontal bits are called steepers, known elsewhere as pleachers, for the process of steeping or pleaching, where a cut is made 80% of the way through the stem allowing it to be laid down flat.

I, too, appreciate the pleaching teaching 😁.
It’s over 30yrs. since I paid for a haircut. I can’t cut hers. Even tho she hates the hairdresser more than the dentist. Hates small talk, explaining she only wants her head lightened and eyes visible. Even tho I have photos of my work, cloud pruning, topiary, coppicing, pollarding and pleaching.

Are you espalliering your fruit trees or pleaching them? We've had terrible luck with espalliering things from bareroot. But we're in Denver where everything is an adventure.

Are you espalliering your fruit trees or pleaching them? We've had terrible luck with espalliering things from bareroot. But we're in Denver where everything is an adventure.
