When I was working on my translation of The Romance of William and the Werewolf a couple of years back, I visited Pleshey Castle in Essex. The castle was home to Humphrey de Bohun, the book’s patron. He set up a workshop here during the Black Death to preserve the skills of scribes and illuminators.

It feels a little too soon to mention the C Word (Christmas, if anyone’s in doubt!) but I’m leading a Quiet Day at Pleshey Retreat House in January 2027 all about Joseph. If you’d like time in the quiet countryside and some talks by me, then book here: www.retreathousepleshey.com/events/the-q...

My #history teacher bought the title “Baron of the manor of Pleshey” for a few hundred quid in the 80s.

A title in the Magna Carta, it was traded away like so many stocks and shares.

Underneath the talk of blue blood and divine right was always someone selling something to get something.

On this day 10th January 1400 (or perhaps yesterday the 9th) John Holland, Duke of Exeter and Earl of Huntingdon, was executed at Pleshey Castle for his role in the failed Epiphany Rising against King Henry IV. He had attempted to flee to Europe but storms drove him back to land.

Keith Flint kept a swearbox above the fire in the pub he used to own (The Leather Bottle in Pleshey, Essex). Whenever he put the logs and kindling in and someone piped up with the obvious joke, he'd point to it and charge them a quid. RIP.

This day December 24th (1215) Mercenaries led by Savary de Mauléon under the direction of King John, occupied Pleshey Castle. On Christmas Day elements of de Mauléon’s band looted the Cistercian Abbey at Tilty, between Great Dunmow and Thaxted.
