It was a bright and frosty Plough Monday and the air was sweet with birdsong. The farmers, old and bark-worn, young and bright-eyed, from every farm and gainery around the village and the hamlet had paid their visits to Old Fox's cottage.
They bade Old Fox a solemn good morning & winked at Wolf,

Unable to participate in Plough Monday wassailing of an apple orchard, I am at least eating a spiced apple donut from the Krispy Kreme drive-thru #PloughMonday

Not sure if this year’s Plough Monday would be last week or tomorrow but here’s a rather lovely 20th century window at St Mary’s Berry Pomeroy, Devon.

Inscription reads:

‘He that ploweth should plow in hope’

I was busy editing yesterday and forgot about Plough Monday! The start of the agricultural year when everyone got back to work after the Christmas festivities. This window is at St Mary’s Berry Pomeroy, Devon.

On #ploughmonday the first Monday after 12th night, the plough came out of the church, and women took the greenery from spinning wheels. Back to work.

A special plough for #PloughMonday. This belonged to Miss Julia White, who farmed Manor Farm here, 1941-1955. She'd pull it up the church aisle to be blessed each year, with her partner Doris, also a farmer. It was pulled by Julia's grey mares, Dolly & Sylvie. Sometimes, I unearth their shoes.

Miss Julia White learnt to plough with horses, aged 40, from Jack Tucker in wartime, in the fields I know & love. I learnt (in theory) from her words, & as I recreated & reanimated them, & walked those furrows. Here’s an extract & a song for #PloughMonday from #GhostsoftheFarm, & a photo of Jack 1/4

Today's the day - back to the fields/the concrete jungle. At this rate, we'll need to have a lie down 😴

#LegendaryWednesday the first Monday after Twelfth Day was Plough Monday, the start of the agricultural year. An old rhyme urged tenant farmers to return to the fields to prepare spring crops: "Plough Monday, next after that Twelfth tide is past/Bids out with the plough, the worst husband is last"

Some old plough drawings I did a while ago for #PloughMonday. All are early tractor-drawn ploughs. The first one was at Carreg Cennen castle in Wales, t'others at the east Kent Museum of Farming. All drawn with Rotring pens.

It’s Plough Monday, the traditional start of the agricultural year. Noel Dumbrell who grew up in West Sussex, talks about life as a carter boy.
