#policywonks Interested to know if this happens in other fields? Tech policy is littered with overly simple solutions that will never do what it says on the tin but which *can* easily be communicated to the media or understood by politicians with low technical literacy.
We need a term that describes digital policy proposals that erroneously position technology as a magic solution. This week has been a week for it: age verification and digital ID are both white elephants that meet the "something must be done!" test without solving the underlying problem.
As much as I like seeing @rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social sharing her wisdom, there is so much about this past week that has made me want to scream and this is not helping.

No? There is a massive overlap between nerdy policywonks and liberals? They might not be the policies you like, but they certainly do think a ton about extremely nitty gritty detailed policies

Definitely going on my TBR #booksky #policywonks #fantasy
Anyway this is definitely a book about zoning. I mean, it's ALSO a magical spy thriller but it's... it's about zoning and land policy really. And cities, and where they came from, and what's underneath them and why, and what "building on the ruins" *really* means.

My beef is with the model of pointing at the status quo economy and saying "This is good! Everything is doing great! We will preserve the status quo!" and making that your campaign pitch, which is what economic policywonks like Stancil make their main political platform.

Moreover, the policywonks who thought Zelensky should have kissed the ring underestimated how much social capital Zelensky has in the US and its allies. For the past three years this guy has been more popular in NATO than several of their own governments.

This thread reminded me of the annual very serious 'Christmas sandwich evidence gathering' we used to conduct at @acmedsci.bsky.social Rigorous methodology, expert-reviewed... by our taste buds. Here's a peek at the highly scientific rating sheet 🎄🥪 #policywonks

Well, policywonks and economists build their worldview on unreliable foundations. They could be individually intelligent, but they're going to be wrong *constantly.*

I'm seeing: a lot more interaction with real-life friends over here. It still isn't at the critical mass tipping point for pulling over those remaining in the Land of Muskerberg, especially the ones not as plugged in. My nerds, policywonks, historians, geeks, socialists, y'all're here. The rest...

I don't think UKRI were intentionally the problem, it was universities tying themselves up in procedural knots where it wasn't necessary.

I like our doctoral college a lot, but they are 200% legalistic-style policywonks and it needed UKRI to say "Oy, stop blaming us!" to stop unis doing that

Populism, left-wing or right-wing, is the junk food of political ideologies. It offers no real solutions, but it's always tempting to offer people solutions that are simple, dramatic, and "common sense". Real progress is not so emotionally satisfying and arrives through gradualism and policywonks.

Trump is a pol of a single word (tariffs) and a single phrase ("mass deportation" to replace "build that wall").

Nuance? That's for suckers.

Long-term implications? For policywonks like Biden-Harris.

Costs? King of debt, remember?

None of it is real.
