Also had an older relative who had a polio limp (paralytic polio), which was fairly common at the time . . . and will be again if we stupidly get rid of the #poliovaccine.

In Australia we use killed virus poliovaccine, so it must have come from tourists, most likely American or Americans as I understood their vaccine is based on attenuated poliovirus. This is still scary as Poliovirus can remain active for up to 6 months in wastewater.

On this day 70 years ago-May 1, 1956-the polio vaccine was first made widely available to the public. The vaccine’s developer, Dr. Jonas Salk, did not patent the vaccine so that it would remain available to as many people as possible in the US and internationally.
