A new political analysis criticizes the Trump administration's proposal to expand access to child care funds by including married parents whose spouse works at least 35 hours per week. The policy, which targets the $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund, has drawn sharp criticism from New York Times columnist Jessica Grose, who argues it is 'especially cruel' given recent cuts to programs supporting low-income families. The policy would allow married parents to access funds intended for single parents and daycare providers, potentially displacing single parents and harming child care providers who rely on the funding. Grose highlights the policy's dual impact: it insults parents by labeling daycare use as 'frivolous and wealthy' while also depriving children of essential services. She emphasizes the need for paid parental leave and child tax credits, arguing that the current family policy in the U.S. is inadequate. The proposal, backed by Vice President JD Vance, faces backlash for potentially pitting stay-at-home parents against working parents and punishing those most in need. Critics note that most mothers prefer to work, citing a 2025 study showing nearly all moms with children under 5 would rather work than stay home. The policy's implementation could exacerbate existing challenges for low-income families and undermine efforts to support childcare infrastructure.
