It also allows (doesn’t guarantee or require) the tax incentives to come from a combination of municipal/county, state, and/or federal taxes, allowing for more localized targeting and avoiding the waterfall problem of top-down funding.

My current, ever evolving working model as I try to understand how the world works outside my area of expertise...

1) There are multiple centers of power in the world (polycentrism).

Yep, but they recovered quickly from it unlike the great depression and recession. Why ? Dutch republic was limited govt allowed greater de-centralisation/Polycentrism unlike USA of today. Infact old name of New York was New Amsterdam which was initially controlled by Dutch West Indies company.

I read the paper more in details, and the 8 rules you're proposing are interesting but I still think they can create the same kind of problems for large problems, similar to what polycentrism governance admit too.

@zackcooper.bsky.social raises a critical point on escalating costs and risks associated with China’s power projection amid technological advancements in warfare. This aligns with the analysis in:

Neoliberal polycentrism wasn’t just a planning model — it was a spatial ideology. And it’s cracking. But what comes next isn’t clear, or coherent. @geographers.bsky.social @americangeo.bsky.social #GeoSky @radicalplanning.bsky.social @urbanstudiesfoundation.org

Polycentrism is awesome, and we’ve seen it work in Vancouver BC. However, that requires there be multiple *centers*. Burnaby & Surrey are *centers*. Gateway & Beaverton are not. When we neglect our center, property tax declines will break the city govt even on cute main streets. Can’t escape it.

They got here with some pretty fancy arguments that basically amounted to "logic entirely breaks when you get deep enough into it." But I don't think you gotta go all that far to reach polycentrism. I think the odd metaphysics of society can do it too.

#AcademicSky, let's get to know each other! Quote this with: 1) project you're working on & 2) idea you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1) Past use of urban edge zones and questions of migration, neighbourhoods & polycentrism.
2) Mesop state textile production & women’s choices & time.

so, that seems to me to be a weird triumph of polycentrism in peoples' heads. Is it like because there are multiple active urban environments that aren't downtown (which is generally good), people think that they're all of equal weight and thus are interchangeable?

[1] e.g. the mix of Ostrom style polycentrism and guild socialism in Wyatt's "Associational Anarchism" could be said to be like that. Should say I'm not sure this particular approach would work in practise, it's mainly an example of the kind of thing I mean.
