#polylectic
I give you #Bombusterrestris aka #Buff-tailed, most efficient forager & in terms of nos, the most common #bumblebee across Europe & esp in the UK.
It's #polylectic, foraging on a wide variety of flowers of unrelated species - unfussy unlike many bumblebees that are scarce or rare due to ..

I'm sure every scientist has these types of terms in there respective fields, others in biology that I find annoying: oligolectic/polylectic, heterogeneous/homogeneous, ex vivo/in vivo/in vitro (but also any use of latin terms)

It is called 'hairy-footed flower bee' because of the 'hairy trousers' of the female 👖💇🏻‍♀️. Also, females usually nest in burrows dug into steep cliffs and walls!

The species is early and univoltine (1 gr. per year, from March to June), feeding on several angiosperm families (i.e. #polylectic) 🌸

yesssss! It's amazing that way. The relevant words, in case you're curious, are monolectic (eats only from one source), oligolectic (eats from a few specific sources), or polylectic (eats ~anything).

The third ID session was complicated, but luckily I had lots of help! - all help, in fact 😅

Let me introduce you to Megachile pyrenaica! A polylectic species whose females build nests from mud and their own saliva (dauber bees). 🐝 🏺

Great point! The idea of objectivity driving dominant cultural outcomes highlights the importance of interrogating “whose objectivity”we’re centering. A "polylectic" approach challenges binary frames. Do you see it working in practice, or is it still largely theoretical? Curious for your thoughts!

Buzzing around from flower to flower is a tiny pollinator powerhouse called Hewitt’s Reed Bee, 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪 (Cameron, 1908) 🐝🌼. These bees are polylectic, which means they visit a wide range of plants and forage throughout a plant’s entire blooming period.
