<insert bell curve meme>

- polymorphism means subtyping
- polymorphism and subtyping are different things
- polymorphism means subtyping

PSA: "parametric polymorphism" doesn't just mean "polymorphism with type parameters". that's just "polymorphism".

in particular, if you allow specialization, the result is not parametric anymore

Balanced polymorphism in a floral transcription factor underlies an ancient rhythm of daily sex alternation in avocado https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2025.12.22.695989v1

This story is absolutely wild. Did you know that avocados change sex over the course of a day? And that it's controlled by a single ancient balanced polymorphism? This is flat our crazy

shower thought: OO achieves polymorphism by putting the subtyping relation on the argument of a function, whereas parametric polymorphism puts it on the function itself

More coverage of @jeffgroh.bsky.social's work on avocado flower mating morphs polymorphism
Scientists have long known that avocado trees live a somewhat spicy life, changing sexes depending on the time of day.

Now, a study helps explain how the process works—and could speed up breeders’ ability to develop new varieties. 🥑: on.wsj.com/4q4c5Fe

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday.

I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further.

If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

My mildly spicy PLT take is that most people who say they want dynamic typing *actually* want a typed language with anonymous records/unions and row/variant polymorphism

i don’t want to cast polymorphism, i want to cast FIREBALL!!!!

it's so common for people to think that if you want good records, you need row polymorphism, but you really don't.

in fact, row polymorphism solves a very specific problem that you probably don't have.

GenAI is a giant search engine, and it doesn't do more for malware than a slightly shittier Google would. Malware has been using polymorphism since I didn't have grey hair and drank less. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Been cooking up a lil blog post/tutorial with a bunch of polymorphism strategies in Rust. A lot of folks coming from OOP languages struggle with “missing” polymorphism features in Rust, so I think it would be cool to share a bunch of the cool solutions I use for filling those holes.

TL;DR: presence of polymorphism (sequence differences between the homologous chromosomes) can *increase* the local rate of recombination in Arabidopsis thaliana, turning cold regions of the genome hot (purple v. grey) !
