One of the things that I believe broke technical education in the UK was the conversion of polytechnics into universities. Polytechnics, in Crosland's original vision, were under local authority control so that the would be more responsive to local industry needs.

The dumbest op-ed you'll read today is from the CEO of 'Polytechnics Canada' whining about the exemption for grad students as evidence of a pro 'university bias' by the feds.
Colleges/polytechnics are responsible for like 90% of the growth in int'l students. Universities aren't the problem.

I'm sensing a bit of a pattern here: government stops some big project with no plans for a replacement, finds out that it's going to cost them more in the long run for a worse result. Huh, imagine that.

maybe we should rebrand post92s as Polytechnics or better yet Working Class Education Institutes, maybe then Labour MPs would stop calling my students (who come from some of the most deprived backgrounds in the UK) 'elite'

This is outrageous. The Nats didn’t campaign on it, nor was it signalled in the Minister’s consultation. Our polytechs are part of our PUBLIC education infrastructure and there is no way that they should be up for sale.

This is what the ITP sector teaches. Give students the foundations at school, then send them along to the polytechnics for industry specific skills.
