It's hedge apple season. These massive fruits of Osage-orange, Maclura pomifera, are dropping throughout the eastern US. They go by many names, like horse apples and monkey brains. There is increasing evidence that the seed oil of this tree has important cosmetic and possibly pharmacuetical uses.

I learned the “evolutionary anachronism” story that bodark tree’s animal disperser had gone extinct and the seeds didn’t reliably germinate, so this is cool! The wood is remarkably beautiful

there’s a lot of berries - Appleberry (Billardiera scandens), Muntries (Kunzea pomifera), Boobialla (Myoporum insulare), several different saltbush berries, native raspberry (several Rubus species) - I could go on but that’s enough to start with

Osage-orange, or hedge-apple, is a tree very familiar to those of us in the Bluegrass, where it was widely planted for natural fencing and hedges. Do you find this tree where you live?

Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) fruit...
I leave fruit in a bucket over several months until mushy... and then mash with piece of firewood...
Pour mash in row in garden... soon see seedlings... & I grow my own fence posts.
