How Derek Walcott’s epic poem Omeros helped Schneider K. Rancy write a Haitian reimagining of The Odyssey.
How Derek Walcott’s Postcolonial Epic Helped Me Write My Novel
It’s hard to understate the importance of the classical tradition to postcolonial literature. The Puerto Rican playwright Luis Rafael Sánchez recast Sophocles’ Antigone in La pasión según Antígona …

Accidental banger of a reading list, tho. Current events in America are an incomprehensible mess of irrational behavior if you don't have some baseline knowledge of those subjects.

"Postcolonial Theory" is a particularly funny title to call "America-hating" given the whole, "the United States used to be a group of separate imperial colonies but then they moved past that stage and into a postcolonial era" part.

People keep explaining to me that the dominant ethno-linguistic group in this postcolonial state is violently opposed to sharing powers with the minorities it rules over, as if this is some kind of unique and insolvable conundrum that we're supposed to be flummoxed by.
Agree completely. The Palestinians and their advocates need to understand that only the freely-given consent of the Israeli electorate will deliver a Palestinian state. October 7th effectively removed that possibility for generations.

A beautifully written memoir, aptly described by Jonny Steinberg as a “brilliant portrait of a family navigating the minefields of the postcolonial world.”

Things Fall Apart: an Igbo village meets the end of the world it knew, in prose that moves like proverbs. Chinua Achebe wrote it in 1958 and the postcolonial novel in English effectively begins here. If you map Nigeria once, map it with this.

His groundbreaking work Orientalism (1978) exposed how Western representations of the so-called 'Orient' reinforced racist stereotypes and legitimized colonial domination, laying the foundations for postcolonial studies.

My guilty pleasure, asking Claude to comment on popular songs, net ephemera, movies with "suprise me with a genuinely deep take, liberal arts style". In the past I tried "postcolonial intersectional deconstruction" as a proxy, but feels a bit dated now.

But basically what I mean is "interesting"!

I got pulled in a different grad school direction (same arguments, but "how do genres of ostensible western 'origin' operate in postcolonial societies' pop cultures?") but I never gave up on the meme-monitoring since I teach rhetoric to freshmen and narrowly escaped my own 4chanification as a teen.

Nighttime reading for Hallowe'en, China Miéville's latest (and biggest) book. A ghost story of sorts, jumbled up with British postcolonial wars, but about a third of the way through it and I've no idea where we're going.

the fact that most of these accounts are mostly like 20 somethings that think theyre being edgy bc they watched a couple YouTube videos (poorly) summarizing some postcolonial theory never ceases to amuse me

I need at least 100 documentaries on Africa NEOW. One for every country. Pre-colonial. Postcolonial. Biafran war. Francophone countries. Lusophone countries. Architecture. Trade routes. Religions. Geographies. Everything outside of the animals, which is all they give us.

An important postcolonial critique: can the Louvre display seized antiquities from Libya and Syria without confronting its own colonial legacy? Published in 2021, still worth reading.

The Louvre Shouldn't Exhibit Trafficked Antiquities from Libya and Syria
The museum forgets that it is already a violent graveyard of colonial-era cultural trophies removed from their homelands under dubious circumstances.

Learning that the king showed up to Independence Day in Antigua, and it rained on him and locals took their sweet time finding him an umbrella, is sparkling with postcolonial irony especially after I taught Jamaica Kincaid’s A Small Place earlier this semester.
