A Tale of Two Clays . . .

I recently discovered that my 'unique' pottery stamp incorporating my initials is basically exactly the same as the one Potclays uses for their test tiles. Time to think again... #pottery

Heavily flecked stoneware that Potclays make that looks very like that when it's thrown.

I've been making pots using Potclays Vulcan and my test pieces of Amaco glazes fired in my community kiln at 1240c have all come out black. Any suggestions why this happened?

Mission accomplished! Made test pieces from each 1kg clay sample (thanks Potclays for selling small bags!).

Testing shrinkage rates, texture variations, and how different engobes/glazes respond on each clay body.

Can't wait to get all the way to glaze fired!

I used to drive to Stoke-on-Trent (to Potclays) once a year to get 6 bags of raku clays as our county central ordering system couldn't source it because there was no demand except for me. I used to pick up special glazes when I was there too. Yes great fun.

These tiles were made with Potclays 164-Onyx and tested with AMACO Satin Matte glazes, a Mayco wrought iron effect glaze, Scarva Mermaid Green Crackle and fires at #nellspottery

I was hoping for was a soft, layered watercolour effect … and most of the glazes delivered exactly that!

It can be tempremtal with glazes. This is from the potclays site
Use zinc-free glazes to prevent unexpected reactions such as bubbling or colour changes. Many ^6 glazes such as Mayco perform well on Vulcan but trial-and-error is needed. Also see our potclaysglazes Instagram feed/highlights.
