Of the £10bn spent on substandard PPE equipment, £1.7bn of that went to firms who were granted access to the VIP lane – and around £1bn of these funds was squandered on items deemed ‘unfit for use’.

To be fair, and as a research chemist, I don't understand the demand for our own clothes/shoes to be used as PPE. If I am working with dangerous materials, I expect proper PPE from my employer; relying on employees/students buying trainers to potentially be ruined is expensive and not H&S compliant.
