Thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington on Sunday for a daylong prayer rally aimed at rededicating the United States as 'One Nation under God'. The event, backed by President Donald Trump and organised by Freedom 250, featured a strong Christian focus with worship music, speakers highlighting the nation's Christian heritage, and a stage decorated with stained-glass style windows depicting founders alongside a white cross. Trump himself appeared in a video reading from 2 Chronicles, a passage often cited in discussions about America's Christian foundations. High-profile Republicans including Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and House Speaker Mike Johnson participated or sent messages. The rally included longtime evangelical supporters such as Paula White-Cain and Franklin Graham. Critics, including progressive Christian groups and Jewish leaders, raised concerns about the promotion of Christian nationalism and its implications for religious freedom in a diverse nation. They pointed to America's history of welcoming multiple faiths and those with no faith. Attendees, many wearing Trump merchandise, expressed strong support for the event's message of returning the country to God. Counter-protests by groups advocating separation of church and state featured symbolic displays like a golden calf balloon. The gathering formed part of celebrations marking 250 years of US independence and highlighted ongoing debates about the role of faith in American public life and politics.
